Multimedia Artifact

Name: Emma Larsen
Content area/discipline: Drama
Grade level: 6-8
Typical Educational Purpose: Communication with parents (weekly newsletter; highlight exceptional students and promote upcoming projects)

Reason for choosing purpose:
Communicating with parents is so important! I think junior high students are especially in that age where it is important that some information is communicated with parents, but the students themselves might not be as enthusiastic to communicate it. So, I tried to create a fun and simple way to get important information to parents!

Tool to create the artifact: Canva.com, pictures, text

What have you done to try to evaluate sources for bias and avoid biased portrayals of diverse identities? Why is this important?
I included a statement after the spotlight about wanting to include all students. If this were a real newsletter (this 'student' is my sister), I'd be really intentional about spotlighting a variety of students, highlighting things they choose to have showcased, and celebrating inclusion and belonging. It is important to help these students develop a positive identity and to help them feel proud of their accomplishments.

I also included information on what each of the individual classes is learning, and included a part about how all students are invited to audition for the show or to be a part of the tech crew. Drama programs are often biased towards performing, but a well-rounded program will emphasize and praise both.

Hey Emma, your artifact is fantastic! I love the layout and you clearly put a lot of thought and effort into this. It's absolutely something I could see in a classroom, and if I received it as a parent, I would know that it was a class with an involved and caring teacher. :) I just learned about canva and am definitely going to be using it more after seeing quality work like yours!
